Each week, my son's class start by writing their 'News'. This is basically a little re-cap of whatever they have been doing over the weekend. I suspect that most 'News' centres around highlights like eating ice creams, dressing up as Iron Man or finding a sticker in the packet of Moshi Monster frubes.
But some weekends are more memorable than others. Like the recent weekend, for example. This was a LONG, long weekend; we were off school from Friday to Tuesday. We filled our days with a combination of activities: a trip to a play centre, lunch with family, several days of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations which we watched on TV (including the concert at Buckingham Palace and the royal carriage procession - all of which were very impressive and extremely memorable) and cycling in the Phoenix Park.
On top of which, my son also played in an away match with his U7 GAA team, for which he wore the new team jersey he had been dying to wear all week, and the cat caught her first bird (gruesome, but interesting to a 7 year old).
So, when I collected him from school yesterday and he told me he had written his news, I was intrigued to know what - of our many, many highlights from the weekend - he would have chosen to share with his teacher and school friends.
'Well,' he said. 'I wrote: My News. Today is Wednesday. I watched Sponge Bobs.'
Seriously? THAT was the best thing about the weekend?
I give up.
