The Department of Education have announced that this year's Leaving Certificate Results will be issued on Friday 3rd September.
Minister for Education Norma Foley TD today announced that Leaving Certificate results for 2021 are expected to issue directly to candidates through the Candidate Self Service Portal on Friday 3 September.
In any subject where a candidate sits the examination and opts to receive Accredited Grades, they will be credited with the better of the two results.
Candidates’ results will be transferred to the CAO to facilitate progression to higher education.
The written examinations begin on Wednesday 9 June and will run until 29 June. Students had the choice to opt to sit the examination or seek an Accredited Grade, or both, in each of their subjects.
Minister Foley said: “I am pleased to be able to announce that the State Examinations Commission expects that Leaving Certificate results will be provided to students on Friday 3 September. Students will receive their results directly on the Candidate Self Service Portal, where they registered their options for examinations or Accredited Grades, or both.
“Students’ results will combine their best results of examinations and Accredited Grades, where they chose both options.
“The usual helplines and supports will be in place for students on results day and beyond. I will be in contact with schools asking them to ensure that guidance support is available to students at this time.
“I would like to take this opportunity once again to stress how important it is that students taking the examinations continue to follow the public health advice and limit their contacts as the examinations approach and during the examination period.
“I wish all Leaving Certificate students taking the written examinations well, in their final preparations this week.”
Notes on Issuing of Leaving Certificate 2021 results:The 2021 Leaving Certificate comprises both examinations and Accredited Grades. The provisional results of the 2021 Leaving Certificate are expected to issue on 3 September to students directly through the Candidate Self Service Portal.
In any subject where a candidate sits the examination and opts to receive Accredited Grades, they will be credited with the better of the two results.
The candidate’s results will be transferred to the CAO to facilitate progression to higher education.
A short time following the issue of results, candidates will have access to more detailed information about both sets of results.
For candidates who took only the certificate examinations in any subjects they will be able to see the marks awarded in the written examination for those subjects, and the marks awarded in any components.
For candidates who opted only for Accredited Grades in any subjects, the estimated percentage marks submitted by their school, the accredited mark following the process of standardisation and the SEC Accredited Grades will be available for those subjects.
Candidates who opted for both examinations and accredited grades in any subjects will receive information in respect of both sets of results for those subjects.
This information will aid candidates who may be considering an appeal of a result in a subject.
Popularity of the option of Accredited Grades or Examinations or both:Of all candidates initially entered for Leaving Certificate and final year Leaving Certificate Applied examinations this year, just 4% did not make a selection on the Candidate Self Service Portal.
Of those that made a selection on the portal, 99% have opted for an Accredited Grade in at least one subject and 91% have opted to sit an examination in at least one subject.
Further opportunity for eligible candidates to be provided with Accredited Grades: The information below was provided directly to candidates on 1 June:
The Leaving Certificate 2021 Candidate Self-Service Portal was open to candidates from the 27 April until 1 May to enable them review and confirm their choices of examinations, Accredited Grades or both for the 2021 Leaving Certificate. When the Candidate Self Service Portal closed there was no further opportunity for candidates to update their choices. However, in recent days, the State Examinations Commission and the Department of Education have received a number of requests from schools and students who wish to change their options from examinations only and to now also opt for Accredited Grades.
A further opportunity will be provided for eligible candidates who have not up to now opted for Accredited Grades to do so later in the summer. This does not require candidates to take any action at this time. The State Examinations Commission will contact all eligible candidates during the summer and offer them the option to receive Accredited Grades.
Candidates should note that their performance in the written examinations in June 2021 will not be used in calculating their Accredited Grades, or vice versa.
This provision of a later opportunity to opt for Accredited Grades will not apply to out-of-school learners or to students studying subjects out of school. These candidates had a very specific application process in which they were required to engage and present evidence of their learning for consideration on or before 21 May. All of the application dates for the out-of-school processes have now closed and there is no further opportunity for these students to engage in the Accredited Grades process.

Why are the results so late this year? There is 60000 plus sitting exams, all will be online the same day to get their results, which will undoubtedly the portal will probably crash. The department had ample time to have all the results out by the normal date. They have put these children through enough
