The committee hoping to set up a new secondary Gaelscoil in Sligo have been disappointed by news that the Department of Education has again refused to grant permission to open their new school

The Educational Training Board as patron, applied on behalf of Coláiste Loch Gile to have an  'Aonad' (Gaelic unit) established at Ballinode College in November 2015. Coláiste Loch Gile was to serve pupils coming from four gaelscoileanna in Leitrim, Sligo and south Donegal along with the pupils from English medium schools who would benefit from a Irish medium education.

The establishment of Coláiste Loch Gile has been refused on two previous occasions. In 2008 they were refused on the grounds that "there was an ample supply of secondary education in Sligo"; the establishment of 18 Gaelscoileanna and Gaelcholáistí in total were refused in that year. In 2015 the establishment of Coláiste Loch Gile was refused as the numbers enrolled were not sufficient and the costs of building the Aonad was seen as excessive.
