Cork Student Wins Doodle 4 Google Contest

Summercove National School in Kinsale must be very proud of their 12 year old student, Mia Buckley, who was this week announced as the overall winner of the Doodle 4 Google competition.

The theme for this year's Doodle 4 Google focussed on Ireland's 1916 Commemorations, called 'Ireland is...' and entrants were encouraged to sum up what Ireland meant to them within the Google logo.

Mia beat 75 other finalists who were selected by a panel of judges which included Song of the sea director, Tomm Moore.

Not only will Mia's artwork be displayed on the Google Ireland homepage for millions to see from March 28th, but she has also been awarded a €5,000 scholarship towards her third-level studies, along with a Chromebook.

She also bagged a €10,000 technology grant for her school and her teacher, Ms Hallissey, also received a Chromebook.

Her winning doodle, entitled 'Ireland is a land so green', is a colourful array of all Ireland has to offer, including imagery of rural settings, music and sport in the iconic Google logo.

Ronan Harris, head of Google in Ireland, commented:

“Mia’s doodle really caught our eye and she really captured Ireland’s rural heritage, as well as our love for music and sports”

The Doodle is poetically captioned:

'Ireland is a land so green with grazing cattle to be seen. Steeped in rich history with music and sports so fine. I love this Irish home of mine.'
