On the 8th of July The Government announced welcome initiatives to assist families with children returning to school in September, including removing fees from school transport for the coming academic year.

Primary School Transport Scheme

The Primary School Transport Scheme supports the transport to and from school of children who reside not less than 3.2 kilometres from and are attending their nearest national school, having regard to language and ethos.

Post Primary School Transport Scheme Information

The Post Primary School Transport Scheme supports the transport to and from school of children who reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are attending their nearest post-primary education centre/school.

Under the terms of the Department's Post-Primary School Transport Scheme children may be eligible for transport where they reside 4.8 kilometres or more from their nearest education centre, subject to limited exceptions relating to ethos and language. While it is the prerogative of parents to send their children to the post-primary school of their choice, eligibility for school transport at post primary level is to the nearest education centre/school, subject to limited exceptions.

Transport for Children with Special Education Needs

The purpose of the scheme is, having regard to available resources, to support the transport to and from school of children with special educational needs arising from a diagnosed disability.

Application forms should be completed and signed by the parent, school principal and the Special Education Needs Organiser. Please visit the Department of Education’s own website for more details.

School Transport Appeals Process

The School Transport Appeals Board is an independent body appointed by the Minister of State at the Department of Education. The School Transport Appeals Board examines and determines appeals against the school transport application process regarding the provision of school transport services and/or grant aid under the terms of the School Transport Schemes.

You may make an appeal by applying on-line.

Decisions made by, or on behalf of, the Department of Education regarding the provision of school transport services and/or grant-aid under the terms of the School Transport Schemes may be appealed to the School Transport Appeals Board.
