The proposed McDonald's drive-through restaurant to be located opposite three schools at the Blacklion Centre in Greystones will not now go ahead.

Temple Carraig secondary school in Greystones, Co Wicklow, had brought a legal challenge to planning approval for a McDonald’s restaurant less than 100 metres from its front entrance. The other two schools located close to the proposed McDonals restaurant were Gaelscoil na gCloch Liath and Greystones Educate Together.

According to the Facebook Group created by locals opposed to the plan, "Both McDonalds and Lidl have issued statements that McDonalds will not be going ahead at Blacklion.
The construction of a McDonald’s drive-through restaurant, located opposite three schools at the Blacklion Centre in Greystones, Co Wicklow will not go ahead.

In a statement, McDonald’s Restaurants of Ireland said it has been informed by Lidl Ireland of its alternative development plans for a new Lidl store on its site in Greystones.
“This intention and its scale rules out the possibility of a Drive-Thru restaurant development on this site.
“McDonald’s Ireland engaged extensively with both Lidl and Wicklow County Council in advance of obtaining planning permission for a Drive-Thru restaurant.
“McDonald’s often seeks to locate new restaurants close to retail outlets which are appropriately zoned in accordance with planning guidelines.
“Proximity to schools is not and will not be a factor for McDonald’s in assessing suitable locations for new restaurants.”

Just a note to confirm that Lidl have once more stated that they will not be ceding any of the land that they own within the retail centre.

Lidl Ireland has now received both planning approval from WCC for their new superstore and confirmation of that by An Bord Pleanala, which rejected several appeals against the planning permission.

Lidl fully intends to proceed with the new store, which will be built on the site of the existing store and will extend the size of its footprint on the site. The green area which McDonald's hoped to colonise will become part of the rearranged parking space.
