I like to think that I am giving my children a rounded education and varied experiences in life - even if most of it does appear to be Lego shaped at the moment (it’s a phase – right?).
We do various sporting activities pretty regularly. We’ve done hip hop dancing. We bake. We have an eclectic mix of music on the iPhone and Santa even brought a guitar to the house last Christmas (even though he did have to take it back to the toy shop in January for a refund - but fleetingly, we had a guitar in the house). When it comes to ‘the arts’ though, we’re not all that great. We’ve flirted with museums and art galleries and put in brief appearances at the odd theatre event here and there, but I think we could do better (note to self).
So, I’m personally delighted to see all the events happening across the country to celebrate
Culture Night this Friday. Culture Night is a free night of entertainment, discovery and adventure taking place across the country. Museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artists’ studios and cultural centres will open their doors late into the evening for everyone, of all ages, to enjoy. There really is no end of activities planned which should entice even the most reticent of individuals out of the house and off to the local art gallery.
As parents, I think we sometimes forget that having children is as much about expanding our own horizons as theirs, so if your cultural awareness has been somewhat lacking of late, why not take advantage and redress the balance this weekend.
Details of Culture Night activities can be found on the website at
