Premises selling alcohol have been told to be vigilant this week ahead of the release of
Leaving Certificate results this Wednesday.
An appeal by drinkaware.ie has asked for shops and pubs to be extra careful when checking young people's ID to ensure they only serve alcohol to those over 18, The Journal reports.
A reminder has also been issued highlighting the important role
parenting can have in educating children about drinking behaviour and setting out clear rules.
Fionnuala Sheehan, chief executive of drinkaware.ie, stated that much of the alcohol consumed by teenagers was accessed in the home and that "parents clearly are very important role models for their children".
The responsible drinking initiative, drinkaware.ie, stated that there had been an 11 per cent decrease among 16-year-old students saying that it is "easy or very easy" to access alcohol in Ireland.
However, findings from the 2011 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs research showed that the perceived availability of alcohol remain higher than the European average amongst 16-year-olds.
