Teachers 'should be offered training on how to deal with child abuse allegations'

Irish teachers should be given more training on how to handle child abuse allegations, it has been asserted.

According to the Sunday Business Post, incoming secretary of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) Sheila Nunan said awareness around the issue needs to be "ramped up" if youngsters are to be properly protected.

"We need to accept that training one person who is then expected to cascade that information to the rest of the staff might not be the best mode. We think it is insufficient and that it should be regularly, and more comprehensively, available to all staff," she told the publication.

Teachers want to be certain if they make referrals regarding suspected cases of abuse that they will be handled in the right way and actively persued, Ms Nunan added.

In related news, the INTO recently criticised the government over its school building initiative after it emerged that just seven of 78 schools earmarked for construction in 2009 have been completed.

I think teachers should be allowed to contact child care services if that teacher detects any kind of child aduse.I was expelled from school for eating from trash cans.Teachers counl but did not help me or my brother.

'Though this article is derrivative from Ireland, it is Universal in scope and I have personal experience with the same issue in Canada. Teachers do need to receive training - and support from their Administrators - if Child Abuse is suspected. Sadly, Admin. fears retaliation by the accused and tends to shy away from reporting. Teachers have been threatened with their positions if they attempt to go above the employer. PLEASE place a CHILD first and report! - VM

I am the author of newly released book in Ireland published by Obrien press Dublin. Our new book is called Mother from hell. You will read how my brother and I survived 16 years of pure hell at the hands of a mother who did not want us from birth. At age 11 I was expelled from school in Tullamore Co Offaly for eating from the bins and stealing other childrens lunches. Our teachers were well aware of what was going on in our home.
No one came to our aid.We did not receive an education because while at school we were in survival mode.Rumiging through bins etc to survive.I remember my teacher calling me names like mousey because he had caught me eating scraps of bread from bins.He should have helped but done us wrong. Our lives have being ruined by those who failed to do anything for us.
Teachers should be trained by victims of abuse not text books on how to detect child abuse .Its a must.No child should have to survive on trash cans. And no teacher should walk past.If a child is stealing food or eating leftovers there is something wrong with the picture. The child has rights and those rights must be protected.A child who is hungry or abused does not learn. We all must look out for these signs and involve the police when we see this. Please visit our website at http://home.comcast.net/~cooffaly64/ .
And please remember it should not hurt to be a kid.
