A primary school in Limerick is set to open as normal today (November 23rd) after a dispute about unpaid bills between the establishment and a construction firm was resolved.
Yesterday, subcontractors entered
Kilfinane National School and attempted to remove fixtures and fittings from the building, which opened in September. The power was also turned off.
They claimed to be acting because they are owed €140,000 from the main contractor responsible for developing the school. However, the men were prevented from leaving with the equipment by parents and
teachers, resulting in a stand-off lasting several hours.
Eventually, a High Court injunction was acquired forcing the 15 workmen to leave without the school property they were attempting to take, which included whiteboards, doors and furniture.
Following this, negotiations were held and reassurances given that the school would be able to open as normal this morning.
The workmen are expected to receive some of the money they are owed, while the Department of Education has confirmed the bill for the construction of the school has been paid in full to the main contractors.
