Mums 'should get kids involved in exercise'

With the festive season now behind us, many parents will be making new year's resolutions and trying to shape up for 2010.

However, one expert has suggested that busy mums can benefit from involving their children in their new routine.

Joanna Knight, editor at Women's Fitness Magazine, said that getting children active is important.

She advised mothers to make time in their schedule for a weekly walk with the family or activity days.

"Lots of mums find that exercise DVDs are perfect, they can be done at home when the children are sleeping, or if the kids are awake they can dance around with you," she added.

A recent survey carried out by OnePoll in the UK revealed that a third of kids think their parents are overweight.

Furthermore, the research revealed that around half of children worry that their parents do not do enough exercise.

I believe all young children should be exposed to sport. The GAA, FAI, RFU and Basketball Ireland all run fanastic programmes now for kids as young as 5. The social side of team sports can be so important for children as they grow older. DVD's and WEE is not the road to take. Exercise is vital for a balanced life. Early habits are essientail and parents are reponsible as the state has washed it hands.
