Learning Support Problems...

Learning Support Problems...           reply

My daughter has dyslexia and ADHD. She also has Cystic Fibrosis which causes her to miss a lot of school.
She is 7 years old, nearly 8 and is in first class, she repeated senior infants.
For the last 3 years she has been going to learning support in school. This involves her being taken out of the classroom and doing work with the learning support teacher either one on one or in a small group.

I have issues with this for a couple of reasons....

1. The learning support teacher in my opinion is incompetent and I dont see any improvement in my childs reading since she started with her...(I have reasons for this belief, Its not just that I dont like her or anything like that!)

2. While in the learning support room my child is missing out on what is going on in the classroom. She often comes home with half a story about something she learned but missed half of it as she was out of the room...

So my idea is to take her out of learning support altogether and try to support her learning myself at home. This way she can participate in a normal school day and then at home we can work on her reading etc.

Has anyone out there taken their child out of learning support/resource? Was it a success?
Am I mad to consider this???

Heeeelp!!!!

As a parent Iv always got a form to opt in or opt out..iv always opted in but never needed...however this year it appears my childs class is being halved and both groups sent to this learning support teacher...it appears to me it´s an exercise to keep teacher employed...im aware of other parents finding out re this so have kept quiet..
As a second level teacher, extra support offered in schools to students is very needs focused and in discussion with subject teacher so I´m assuming national school the same...what you are proposing would be more like grinds, independent to school curriculum. I´d arrange appointment immediately with school and ask to see say a terms plan as you wish to work on your child´s plan yourself. Sometimes it´s very hard see progress as it looked like my six year old last year was never going learn to read with the way the class learning and this September it just clicked! But gut feeling is everything!
