How much approx please to mind 3 primary school children (ages 5, 8 and 9) in children´s own home, 5days/wk Mon-Fri.

From 06.45 to 08.15 (school bus collects near house) and
14.45 (school bus returns) to 18.00.
So, approx 5hrs/ per school day. (Minder free from 08.15 to 14.45)

During school holidays to mind from 6.45 to 18.00 in children´s own home.

Set price or per/hr?

I wouldn´t really say the minder is free during them times?
She would be on call if one of the chidlren needed to be picked up. Personally I would charge/pay €80/€90 a day

I agree with the previous reply of €80-€90 per day during term time. But only if minder is not on call. For almost 12 hours work during holidays I reckon about €150 per day.

How much do you think parents are earning ie their take home pay to be able to afford €90 a day never mind 150 per day. €150 a day x 5 days a week is €750 . In order to take home that yoy would need a salary of over €1100. per week just to pay childcare before you have a cent to pay for petrol never mind a few euros to buy groceries. Please do mot put out these outlandish figures.

I beg to differ but €750 for 60 hours work is not outlandish. Take into account that the standard working week is based on 39 hours it works out at less than minimum wage.

Outlandish? How much would you be willing to charge or pay out? Our kids are our prized possessions and some people expect their kids minded for noting. It´s a long day there long hours. It´s not an easy job. What ever a parent makes is not my business that´s theirs and if they can or can´t afford childcare and a right price that´s there choice

But you’re not working 60 hours per week. You are working 25 hours per week. If you are called in by the school To take the child home(which is a rarity) the most you will have the child is for the rest of the day and for that you should be reimbursed if it happens and not paid for 3x the actual hours on the off chance that it does happen.

80e quoted above at 5 hours term time by 3 children is 5e an hour per child. Its an early start and a late finish, with a very long split working day. Majority would give up fairly quickly, especially if not experienced and realising the responsibility ahead, at that pay level as they can make that at home childminding for a shorter working day.
Non term time, full long day, hardly outlandish tbh. Childcare costs should be looked at as being split between the two wages coming into the home, as both parents are earning. More difficult if single parent, one a student etc but then they wouldn´t be looking to hire a nanny, the most expensive form of childcare.
Going forward chances are kids will be home more often, where previous the school kept them with a cough, slight temp as no need check, sore throat, runny nose etc. Parents are looking for nannies in a big way for this reason as they could need to be in work. Nannies need to tighten up their policy re c19 and when they don´t mind.

Dear all,
Thank you all for your replies and views. I am a registered Clinical Scientist (Cancer - Radiotherapy). My salary is just over €500/week and for 37 hours work only. Lunch breaks are not included/paid. Weekly train ticket is €102, station car parking €9 and weekly cleaner €50 approx (as I am full-time). Afterschool for 5yo (1hr/day) is €20 weekly and school bus is €220/year (no car needed by minder). There is approx €350 left. My salary contributes absolutely nothing towards groceries, car, bills or household costs of any form. I am wholly financially dependent on my partner. I work just to upkeep my skills and practice.
The hours above are just approximate, they are not fixed. My job is 37 hours plus commute, be it earlies/ lates. Hospital clinical work is whatever it takes to get the patient safely covered, it is not an office job. I hope to have AL for school holidays, but I am a new starter, so I have to be patient. My train is 1hr 5mins each way.
I don´t need a qualified nanny as all children are over 5. School age children are more dependent, need less attention, are happy to entertain themselves and require much less physical work and supervision, as compared to babies and toddlers (who are totally reliant on carer).
The school starts at 8.50am and the school bus collects from 8.05 to 8.25am max. So the school day has an early start if I like it or not! Children would be up from 7am (to have 1 hour to get ready). But with C19, school life for autumn/ winter 2020 is unknown and remote learning is set to be a large factor. I can only propose 25hrs /week in these unique times.
Thank you so much

Sounds like you might be better with either an au pair In your home or 1 minder for the 1.5hours in the morning and another for the afterschool hours. I really can’t see any minder agreeing to be on standby for 60 hours per week while only getting paid for 25.

Keep looking, you will definitely get somebody kind and caring to mind your children for €350pw. I don’t know anyone who pays €500pw for a childminder, let alone to mind three school going children for 5hrs per day. I agree with Bernie.... it’s an extortionate amount of money to charge for only 25 hrs pw.Best of luck

I agree, you’d get someone for 25 hours for that price, but not for 60 hours

Meep, it´s tough indeed but many give up work when working has no financial benefit or its just too much stress for a few years. Have you looked into an afterschool service, you might be entitled to some help on the NCS. An au pair for term time would be ideal. Or two separate nannies as suggested above. Best of luck

Meep, you are also making the classic mistake of using your full wage to pay for childcare so it looks like it´s not worth it financially to you. Its great read your interested in staying up todate with work. You need look at it that your wage and your partner´s wage is the pot which bills are paid from and decide whats needed and what´s not. The cleaner perhaps could go if the nanny wanted to do a few cleaning hours, I know a nanny who cuts the lawn etc so it´s very possible.

Thank you Meep for showing exactly what take home pay is really like and i agree with Marsu you will find some who will be more than happy to mind your kids for reasonable weekly wage nobody i know either family or friends are paying the prices quoted here. By people quoting these figures they put un necessary stress on Parents.

Apologies for the delay. Your answers are very informative.
Afterschool until 6pm would not be possible for me unfortunately, as my hours are dictated by clinical needs of the service.
The rota hours are 8-4pm, or 10-6pm (which could extend to 8pm) if required. Plus the commute/ train timetable whould mean possible arrival at home 19.45 (for 6pm finish) and even 21.45 (for unlikely 8pm finish).
For the late finish though, I would do the morning school bus, the carer has just the pm (approx 5 hours). So, yes €350 for 25 hours. That is the maximum I can afford, even if I make a continued loss.
The hospital has no guarantee of AL during school holidays, as co-workers also have a right to request.
My last pay packet worked out at €94/day (or €473/wk), thus less then expected. The above figure of just over €500 was a guess. There is a penalty of a mother returning to work after a few years of being a stay at home mum. You start at the bottom of the scale again.
So why go through the hassle? I don´t wish to throw away long years of specialised training, education and experience. I see this as a temporary sacrifice, even though it feels like the raw deal. Quality of family life will be poorer and exhaustion at starting a second shift when I arrive home. In the longterm, I hope to have better choice - as the implications of returning to work in 10, 20 or even 30 years, would in all likelihood be far too late.
Thank you so much for all for your time, your replies are a great resource and a joy to read.

Im a childminder, i have kids that start at 7 and finish between 6.30 -7, i mind other kids in my home so im able to charge a reasonable rate . For 3 kids i charge € 250 a week, on school holiday i don´t raise the money, i give the kids breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, i do school drop off and collection, playschool drop off and collection for this price, maybe if you could find someone that minds other children the rate wouldn´t be as high
