I know from experience that in many secondary schools, including non-fee paying, you have to pay a fee in order to accept a place if offered. However when you child starts in the school the fee you paid is offset against school costs, e.g. books, materials etc. The catch is if you accept the place, pay the fee and then subsequently turn down the place, the fee paid is not refundable.

I haven´t come across having to pay a fee to a non-fee paying school at the time of application.

Can anyone tell me whether you normally have to pay a fee when applying for a place in a non-fee paying secondary school.
