Pressure to pay taxes In the past, Amazon customers have loved a break from paying state sales taxes. However, the Seattle-based online merchant has come under pressure from states to change that. So far, however, is has pushed them off by promising to build more fulfillment centers, adding jobs to communities across the country. It has said it would build 18 such centers this year. According to the Wall Street Journal, only six of them had been opened by the end of June.
