The south of Spain enjoys glorious hot and long sunny days, has beautiful kid friendly beaches and loads of activities for families to do. Here is Schooldays.ie guide to Costa del Sol, Spain.
The Costa Del Sol (Coast of the Sun) is right in the heart of Southern Spain. It is in the Province of Malaga, Andalucia that include Malaga city, Marbella, and the resort towns of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, and Estepona.
Flight times to the south of Spain (Malaga) are 3 hours. Weather in the south means hot dry days with around 12 hours of sunshine during the summer. Rain is rare and the temperatures are usually in the high 20s or low 30s. However, if there is no sea breeze this can get up to 40 degrees. The sea temperature is on average 27° (based in July).
Spain is great for travelling with kids of any age, and the Mediterranean lifestyle means that young children stay up late with adults, and can often be seen running around main squares and cafes until 11pm or midnight.
Many hotels and resorts are designed with children in mind so will have activities, kids’ clubs, babysitting services and lots of entertainment in-house. Along the Costa Del Sol there are tons of amusement parks, water parks, zoos, museums and galleries all aimed at families.
Southern Spain lifestyle is based on the beach, and in the Costa Del Sol there are no shortage of beaches and activities all along the coast that are enjoyed by families with toddlers or teens.
The sun can get very hot in the south, so what better way to cool off and have fun in one of the Spanish famous water parks. There are two large water parks in Costa Del Sol that are extremely popular during the summer months. There is Aqualand in Torremolinos one of the largest water parks in Europe, where families can expect to spend a whole day enjoying all the different rides that suit all ages.
There is also the Aquatic Park ( Parque Acuatico) in Fuengirola which is smaller than Aqualand but has lots of rides and designed for kids ages 6- 14 years.
If your kids are bored of the beach and water parks then there are plenty of wildlife zoos to keep them entertained. There is Biopark in Fuengirola that houses tigers, leopards and gorillas. In Estepona, there is a large safari park, Selwo Aventura, with a smaller marine park attached called Marine Aventura with dolphins, sea lions, penguins and more.
In Benalmadena there is a Sea Life which houses sharks, octopuses, sea horses, large turtles and lots of marine life. Crocodile Park is beside Aqua Park in Torremolinos and is filled with more than 300 species of crocs and reptiles.
The beaches in the Costa are shallow and sandy making it perfect for kids and families so make sure your resort or accommodation is in walking distance from them. Costa del Sol is most popular tourist destination in Spain so please remember that beaches and restaurants can be crowded during the summer months.
