Back to School: Stationery Essentials- Good Buys

It’s difficult to keep track of all the bits and bobs your child will need for school. Their needs change from class to class and, very often, parents may need to purchase back to school items well into the school year. Whether your child is just starting in school in September or whether they are heading into their Leaving Cert year, we have a list of all the essentials they will need that you may not have thought of.

From pencil cases to staplers, and calculators to notebooks, we have found some great buys that are up for grabs for all you early-bird back to school shoppers!

For Younger Students…..

Easons stock these cute teddy bear pencil cases for €5.99, something every young Primary student should own!

You can fill the pencil case with Tesco’s colouring pencils, 24 pack for just €6.50.

Dealz have this stationery set which includes 3 pencils, 3 erasers, 3 sharpeners, 1 pen and 1 ruler for €1.49. Stocking up on these smaller items is a good idea, we all know how easy it is for a 6 year old to ‘misplace’ an eraser (even if it is up their nose!)

You can pick up a pack of 10 Ormond copy books for €2.99 in Mr Price stores. We advise that you buy these in bulk, especially if you have younger children. You can never have too many copy books as they will need new ones every year!

Rulers usually come in four different types; rubber, wooden, plastic and metal. Metal and wooden rulers mixed with young boys playing pirate can be a recipe for disaster. We believe your safest bet is with the flexible, and relatively harmless, rubber ruler. Mr Price stores have a variety of colours available in stores for 99c.

Make a note! Mr Price and Dealz also have a vast assortment of pens, highlighters and TipEx products for very reasonable prices throughout the year.

For Older Students…..

As children grow older, they might not want to be seen with the, once cute but now embarrassing, pencil case anymore! We suggest this pencil case from Mr Price which is available in a variety of colours and priced at €3.99.

For a more chic option, go for this Derwent Canvas pencil wrap style case, ideal for the stylish young art student who likes to stay organised. You can get this on Amazon for about €7.

A basic calculator may suit students up until First or Second Year , but as they advance they will need to get a scientific calculator for more complex maths problems. These can be a bit on the pricey side but we found a bargain with this Sharp scientific calculator in Argos for €6.49. You can expect to pay between €10 and €20 for one elsewhere.

If your child is taking a science subject, then you will also need a hardback science notebook which you can get at Easons for €2.49.

You will also need to buy a geometry set for your child. Tesco’s have this Oxford Maths Set in stores for about €4.

For the music students, you can pick up a Music Manuscript in Mr Price stores for just 49c.

In Secondary school, students tend to be given loose work sheets or papers that can easily get lost. You can get a small stapler from Easons for €1.99 along with refills of the same price and your child can keep track of all those pesky pages for each class!

Alternatively, you can purchase this 40 sheet display book from Tescos for €3.20.

A USB memory stick is fast becoming a necessity in today's schools. Digital forms of study serve as an environmentally conscious alternative to sheets upon sheets of paper (and it is easier on your child’s back at the end of the day.) You can get this SanDisk 8GB memory stick in Argos for €9.49.

Or, for a novelty memory stick, go for this iGloo Baby Penguin 8GB memory stick. It is available for under €5 on Amazon.

Study Aids

Sticky index notes are great for the exam student in your family. They are colour coded and serve as bookmarks for your child to find exactly what they need in even the thickest of books! You can pick up a pack in Dealz for €1.49.

Highlighters are a must-have for every exam student! Studies have shown that colour-coded notes help students learn and retain information more easily. Pick up a 4 pack of different coloured highlighters in Mr Price for €1.49.
