61,000+ Leaving Certificate students receive their Leaving Certificate Results today after 10am. The figure of 61,000 includes over 3,000 students who sat the alternative Leaving Certificate Applied programme. While grades this year are up an average of 2.4 % on last year's grades, there are substantially higher increases in many higher level subjects which may lead to a rise in points for many college courses when CAO offers issue next Tuesday.
This year's results arise from a combination of examination reults and accredited grades which students receiving whichever is the higher. The majority of students opted for a combination of both. Students will not know today whether the results they achieved is from the examination or the Accredited Grades. They will have to wait until the Candidate Portal re-opens on 7th September for further data on both sets of results.
An example of some of the substantial increases of H1s can be seen in the following subjects with many other subjects, particularly science subjects, seeing similar increases:
H1s in English - up by 3.2% from 4.4% to 7.6% of all candidates
H1s in Maths - up by 6.5% from 8.6% to 15.1% of all candidates
H1s in History - up by7 7.2% from 11% to 18.2% of all candidates
H1s in Biology - up by 5.8% from 11.6% to 17.4 of all candidates
The State Examinations Commission (SEC) says that estimated marks submitted by schools this year were generally higher than last year.
Most of those estimated marks did not change as a result of the national standardisation process. However 17% of teachers' marks were downgraded, while 6% were increased.
Minister for Education Norma Foley paid tribute to the resilience of students over the course of the pandemic. “I would like to congratulate each and every one of the students who will receive their results today.” “Today is the reward for all your efforts throughout the past number of years.”
There are very tight deadlines this year for applying to view scripts (from 5pm 7th September) and to submit Appeals (from 9am Sat 11 September) - View all the important dates and information on the Schooldays Leaving Certificate Results Section
First round CAO offers will issue on Tuesday 7th September . The Department of Further and Higher Education revealed earlier this year that there will be an additional 1,250 places made available on high-demand courses in third level institutions. This does not include the 1,415 additional places announced through the Human Capital Initiative.

ASTI President congratulates Leaving Cert students
‘You have endured much uncertainty. Your teachers are proud of you today’
ASTI President Eamon Dennehy has sent a message of congratulations to approximately 60,000 Leaving Certificate students who are receiving their results today (Friday, September 3rd):
“The past 18 months have been extremely tough for this year’s Leaving Cert students. You have had to cope with significant disruption and uncertainty. Today marks your entry to the next stage of your lives, with all of its opportunities. Your teachers are very proud of you today.”
Mr Dennehy welcomed the recent statement by the Minister for Education Norma Foley that she intends that Leaving Cert 2022 will go ahead as normal:
“Young people deserve a State Exams process that is consistent with their expectations and that they can trust. External assessment administered by the State Exams Commission ensures that the Leaving and Junior Cert exams processes remains transparent, objective and fair.”
Budget 2022 – opportunity to prioritise young people
The ASTI President called on the Government to prioritise young people in the rebuilding of Ireland’s society and economy. “We must protect and maintain our education system. Ireland performs well in international comparisons of second-level students’ learning outcomes. However, our track record for investment in education is abysmal. The most recent OECD report Education at a Glance 2020 finds Ireland in 35th place out of 35 countries for investment in second-level education as a proportion of GDP.”
“This underfunding of our schools has a disproportionate negative impact on less advantaged students; something which has been exacerbated during the pandemic. The Government must do better in this regard, otherwise many of our young people will experience life-long consequences.”
Mr Dennehy concluded with a message for students receiving their results today: “This is a day to celebrate as a key milestone in your life. I urge you to keep yourself and those around you safe.”
