Best Rainy Day apps for the Kids on their holidays

It’s holiday time and you have your beach towels, bucket and spade and factor a million sunscreen on hand and are ready to hit the beach. But alas, it’s started to rain, and now the kids are stuck inside with bored surly faces and you’ve ran out of ideas.

Never fear! Here at Schooldays.ie we’ve got the best rainy day apps for children when all other games and actvities have been exhausted! We already have a list for fun family apps to do during the summer that parents and kids can play together. Today’s list is the best kid friendly apps for ages 7yrs and up. We generally try to find the best free apps out there on tablet and phone but some of these you will have to buy. Remember free apps are full of ads, so make sure your kids know how to avoid in-app purchases!

IMPORTANT TIP: Unless you have guaranteed wifi at your holiday destination or on the road be sure to choose games and apps that can be used without internet connection.

Minecraft. Pocket Edition
IOS /Android. €7/8, Offline mode: Yes.

Minecraft is the world’s most popular kid’s game, has been around a few years now and most kids have it on their radar. If you have yet to experience this user generated game or think it won't be suitable for your children, you’ll be surprised how versatile and unusual this game is. The objective of the game is to build your own worlds using tools and minerals extracted from the ground. There is a multi-player mode too that allows you to play with other users online. This app isn't about killing zombies, it’s about thinking and using your imagination to dream up any type of world you desire. Both boys and girls over ages 6/7 years will love it!

Dumb Ways to Die (1 and 2)
Iphone. Ipad. Free. Offline Mode: Yes

What began as a Australian Metro safety campaign video with a seriously catchy song and goofy graphics telling kids how to keep safe by showing them ‘dumb ways they can die’, has turned into a hugely successful arcade-like game. Slightly gruesome in a cartoon-ish way, these funny silly games include safety messages but is still full of mindless fun older kids will love. Not very challenging but parents can be sure kids are learning how to keep themselves safe!

Big Math Flash Cards
Ipad, Iphone. Free, 4+ years

Highly rated by teachers, parents and kids of all ages! Flip the card just like a real flash card! Simple, clean and easy to use interface. The front side of the card shows the question and the back side of the card shows the possible answers. Just tap to flip the card. Once you answer the question correctly, flick the card off the screen by swiping up.

Thinkrolls 1 & 2
Iphone, Ipad. €2.99 Offline Mode: Yes.

Thinkrolls is another learning based app game for kids ages 3-9 years old. Based on logic and physics, the game is played using a host of characters who use problem solving, memory, motor skills to get through levels, with two player options and parents can join in too. It is a fun app that also introduces kids to new educational concepts such as gravity, force, electrics and light and will hold your kid’s tiny attention spans longer than most learning based games. Sneaky educational apps that kids will love? Happy Holidays!

Layton's Mystery Journey 1 & 2
Iphone, Ipad. €17.99 Offline Mode: Yes.

Though more expensive than most other games here, this game is an iPhone/iPad version of a feature length video game originally made for the Nintendo 3DS, which usually costs 45. The Layton Games are a critically acclaimed series of puzzle solving games, guaranteed to provide hours of puzzling fun to your children. Join Katrielle Layton in the heart of London, as she becomes embroiled in a casual, comical, quizzical quest, which has its roots in our new hero’s search for her missing father, Professor Hershel Layton. From the Houses of Parliament to Tower Bridge, follow Kat on her trusty bicycle, solving case after unlikely case, until she unwittingly uncovers the Millionaires’ Conspiracy.
