NAPD Highlights Urgent Need for Reform in Ireland’s Education System

The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) has raised concerns that Ireland’s current education system is not meeting the diverse needs of all students. At the 2025 NAPD Symposium, the central question posed was whether the system effectively serves every young person.

NAPD Director Paul Crone highlighted issues such as poor attendance, rising anxiety, and student disengagement as indicators of systemic shortcomings. He emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts among stakeholders—including the Department of Education, statutory bodies, unions, and management entities—to develop effective policies that address these challenges. Crone pointed out that the evolving demographics in schools, with a significant increase in students requiring additional educational support and those from international backgrounds, necessitate a responsive and inclusive educational framework.

He also expressed frustration over the slow pace of educational reforms, noting that delays contribute to more students being underserved. Achieving meaningful change, according to Crone, requires a societal shift in attitudes toward education, beginning with discussions at home and extending to a unified approach within the educational community.
