Reducing School Waste: Glanmore Foods Approach to Sustainable School Lunches

At Glanmore Foods we feel it’s our duty to help protect the world our young diners are set to inherit. That’s why we have made an ambitious commitment to reach Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Across the board, we’re reimagining ways to produce and package our meals to reduce our carbon footprint.

We're all about the three R's of recycling: Reduce, reuse and recycle. That way, we can go about providing nutritious school meals in a way that minimises our environmental impact and minimise school waste. Below are just some of our sustainability initiatives:

Reduce

  • We offer reusable water bottles and filtration systems in classrooms to reduce any reliance on single-use plastic as an alternative to our 100% recyclable water cartons sourced through Borrisoleigh Bottling in Co. Tipperary.

Reuse

  • Reusable baskets are employed for food transportation, supporting a circular economy.
  • 100% of the energy required to produce our school lunches is generated through renewable sources..

Recycle

  • Our hot meal packaging and utensils are 100% compostable, and our cold lunch paper bags are recyclable.
  • All wrappers, lids for pasta salads, fruit pots, and snacks feature recyclable packaging.

  • Brown bins and compostable bags are provided for the correct disposal of food waste, and a weekly collection is arranged with a local waste collection company. We send food waste to composting plants, with a proportion undergoing anaerobic digestion to make bio-methane gas for renewable energy.

Our ambitious commitment to achieve Climate Net Zero by 2030 underpins our broader approach to sustainability. We are the only national school meals provider holding ourselves accountable to this critical environmental pledge.
