Halloween Mid Term Getaways: The Canary Islands



Looking for the best place to go for a week long relaxing holiday with the family for the Halloween break? Look no further, here is Schooldays.ie breakdown of the best spots in the beautiful Canary Islands this Autumn.

Where are they?

The Canary Islands belong to Spain and are located just off the northwest coast of Africa. The four most popular islands among family holiday makers are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Flight time from Dublin is approximately 4 and a half hours.

What’s the weather like?

The maximum daytime temperature is a warm 26 degrees with 7 hours of sunshine in October. The water temp is high at 23 degrees with 30mm of rainfall for the month, on average.

Best bits for families?

    • Famara, Lanzarote - Famara is a fantastic spot for families interested in surfing and water sports. Located on the northwest coast of the island, the curving bay is surrounded by dramatic pink toned cliffs. While there are no bars or restaurants on the beach, there are several to choose from in the nearby village of La Caleta de Famara.
    • Sand dunes of Corralejo National Park, Fuerteventura - With a stretch of 11km long white sand dunes, Corralejo is one of the main attractions on the island of Fuerteventura. The beach is very clean and is suitable for children. There are watersports on offer at the beach, with sunbeds, sunshades, toilets and showers available.
    • Maspalomas, Gran Canaria - Maspalomas is a tourist town located to the south of the island of Gran Canaria. Around Maspalomas you will find the best of the islands beaches as well as a 68m tall lighthouse located at the point where the 12km long beach leads to the famous Playa del Inglés.
    • Timanfaya, Lanzarote - Timanfaya National Park is located on the southwestern part of the island of Lanzarote and covers an area of 51km^2. The parkland is entirely made up of volcanic soil, with volcanic activity still continuing in the area. Here, you will be able to enjoy a meal cooked over the heat of the islands only active volcano, and watch water on the ground instantly turn to steam.
    • Aqualand, Tenerife - Aqualand is a water adventure park located in the Costa Adeje area offering a selection of swimming pools and slides as well as spectacular dolphin shows. With plenty of cafes and restaurants as well as sunbeds and sunshades, the park is the perfect place to relax while the kids are kept entertained.

Which Islands?

Gran Canaria

With approximately 500 beaches and fantastic weather all year round, Gran Canaria is the perfect spot for a mid term holiday with the kids. If you are looking for a more active holiday, the island is a hiking and cycling hotspot with trails running throughout the island.


Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, with much to offer families travelling with kids. The island is famous for its abundance of watersports on offer, as well as its natural parks, walking trails and
wildlife. The island is made up of tiny, unspoilt mountain villages, as well as its famous lively holiday resorts.


Lanzarote

Lanzarote is famous for its black sandy beaches and dramatic landscapes. With large resorts including Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, the island is well set up for family holiday makers in need of some relaxation away from home in the sun.


Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura With 340 km of coastline, Fuerteventura is the perfect destination for those looking to spend their holiday on the beach. The island is ideal for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking and is more relaxed and low key than some of its neighbours.
