Children should be encouraged to walk to school whenever possible, rather than take the car.
This is according to Tony Armstrong, chief executive of Living Streets, who suggested that the earlier people get into the habit of walking the better.
"Certainly we have seen a decline in the past 30 years in people walking to school. More and more people are being driven to school and what that does is store up potential health problems in the future," he explained.
Mr Armstrong noted that walking to school is a great way for both children and parents to get some exercise.
It also helps youngsters to learn about their local community and become more familiar with their surroundings, he added.
Speaking recently, Rich Leigh, weight loss expert and founder of FatFreeFitness, said it is vital to find the balance between what is healthy for kids and what is not.
