Halloween Mid Term Getaways: Morocco

Looking for the best place to go for a week long relaxing holiday with the family for the Halloween break? Look no further, here is Schooldays.ie breakdown of the beautiful, exotic and anicent Morocco this autumn.

Where is it?

Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Flight time direct from Dublin is 3 to 4 hours.

What’s the weather like?

Weather is warm and sunny throughout the year with temperatures averaging 26 degrees in Spring months, with some rain.

Best places for families?

Beaches, desert tours, ancient cities, and colorful markets, Morocco has it all. Moroccan, like all arabic culture, place children at the center of their society, so kids stay up late and are adored by their parents. Travellers’ children are no exception and will attract lots of positive attention from locals, and families will feel safe everywhere. The only downside is lack of baby-changing facilities and there is only a few shops that will stock nappies. Football is their national sport so if you have older kids bring a football so they can play with the locals.

Purpose built resorts like Agadir, Essaouira and in Marrakech are all family friendly with lots to offer like kids’ clubs, children’s entertainment and sports facilities.

Agadir is an Atlantic coast beach side town resort with beautiful white sands, loads of seaside activities and plenty of accommodation to suit every budget. Europeans flock there during the winter months so it will feel like holiday season when you arrive. There are beach buggies, camel rides, and a large market to check out. Flights go directly to Agadir airport where there is a 40 min taxi/couch ride to seaside town.

Marrakech is a bus trip from Essaouira. The former French colony town is bursting with culture with Parisian style boulevards to old world style town of Medina filled with secret passageways that families will love exploring. First world is mixed with third world here, with mercedes dodging mopeds, along with horse and cart. Activities include day trips to the Atlas mountains, as well as visiting mosques, markets, palaces and baths.

Stay away from the large market Jemma el-Fnaa at night as street hawkers can get intense, but kids will enjoy it during the day. Take a horse and cart around town, or head to the beautiful Le Jardin Majorelle, botanic gardens. Things to consider are locals understand french and a little english so make sure accommodation staff are multilingual.

Essaouira, is north of Agadir and easy to travel to by bus or train. The port town architecture is influenced by Portuguese and French and Berber, and this laid-back beach town attracts families, couples and surfers from all over Europe. There is plenty of discovery, so take a stroll around the central square, La Place, and check out the shops, cafes and restaurants which serve amazing moroccan food and coffee. The town is rich in culture with street music, museums, art and the world’s finest furniture and cabinet makers. Check local resorts for extras like swimming pools and kids’ clubs.
