Glasnevin Museum School Tours
Glasnevin Cemetery Museum offers exciting and engaging education programmes for students of all ages. Students can learn about the events and personalities which shaped the course of Irish history one hundred years ago through guided tours of the cemetery, interactive exhibits and preparatory work packs - all of which complement specific elements of the curriculum.
Historic tours for Primary and Secondary Schools
Students can learn about the events and personalities which shaped the course of Irish history since 1800 through guided tours of the cemetery, visiting the graves of Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Collins, James Larkin, Countess Markievicz, and many more besides. Students and teachers can also make use of interactive exhibits and preparatory work packs, and curriculum-based work packs will be sent ahead of your visit to help students prepare.
1916 Rising Exhibition and Tour
Our 1916 Rising Centenary Exhibition gives students the opportunity to learn about the Irish men and women who experienced the 1916 Rising in a challenging and memorable way, and is explored on our tour through the lives of those buried in the cemetery.
WWI Tour with Handling Session
Glasnevin Cemetery Museum also offers a First World War tour with optional handling session for primary and secondary school students.
Following the First World War tour of the cemetery, students will have the opportunity to hold, comment on and ask questions about objects from the period 1914-1918.
Speechmaking Workshop
Taking the oration given by Patrick Pearse at the funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa in August 1915 and drawing on the inspiration his words gave to those present at the graveside, Glasnevin Cemetery Museum offers a speechmaking tour for students from 5th class to 2nd year.
Students will learn about the people buried at Glasnevin Cemetery who have had a positive impact on society through politics art, literature, music or engineering and present speeches on the ideals of these historical figures during their visit to Glasnevin. This programme incorporates elements of the English and history curriculum.
Transition Year Tour Guiding Programme
Looking for a challenging, valuable and fun program for your Transition Year class? Why not try Glasnevin’s Transition Year Tour Guiding Programme? Not only will you learn about the importance of tourism to the economy, but students will develop the skills of researching, writing and public speaking, while also exploring the history of nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland.
The program includes two visits to Glasnevin Cemetery; the first is the training portion of the programme, and on the second visit each student steps into the shoes of the tour guide and performs, informs and entertains their audience.
Forthcoming Educational Programmes for 2017-18
For 2017-18, we are developing a number of new educational offerings geared towards the needs of the Leaving Certificate History Curriculum, including dedicated workshops and tours for the Leaving Certificate Research Study, with a particular focus on the ‘Decade of Centenaries’.
