Career Guidance

All students in Ireland are entitled to career guidance at school. This is normally delivered by a Guidance Counsellor and other teachers with expertise in the area. They are there to help students understand about careers and help with any decisions students have to take that effect their career prospects.

Some of the decisions students have to make while at school include:
    • What subjects to choose, and whether they are at Higher (Honours) level or Ordinary (Pass) level.
    • What combinations of subjects are best for certain courses or jobs
    • How to prepare a CV and apply for jobs
    • How to choose and apply for college courses during your last year in school
    • How to apply for courses in England or Europe
Guidance Counsellors are often very busy, and may not always have enough time to give each student the attention they would like. It is really important that the student makes an appointment with your Guidance Counsellor, they have a wealth of knowledge and experience that may be very helpful in guiding the students choices.

Your Role as a Parent/Guardian

It’s exciting to be a part of your child’s life as they move onwards into adolescence and adulthood, supporting them as they make decisions and set goals that will guide them into an independent, productive and fulfilling life. There are also challenges, obstacles and anxieties along the way. You have a coaching, counselling and mentoring role but it’s useful to know where you can go for good careers advice, assessment and support.

Parents sometimes contact School Principal and Year Heads as a preliminary point of contact on general career and educational progression queries. They may then be referred on to the school Guidance Counsellor.

Where to go for additional help?

For many students the support and guidance of their families, teachers, principal and guidance counsellor is more than enough to help them through the various stages of their career and educational journey. However additional help is sometimes needed. In this case your options are Other – family and social networks, professional associations & organisations
