Family movies to watch on Netflix this Mid term

Christmas holidays are just behind us and already the first mid term break upon us. Many children, though not all, have a solid week of lounging over the February Mid-term while parents look to keep them entertained over the break. If the weather is holding you hostage indoors then the best thing is to pull the curtains, grab the popcorn and settle in for a family movie.

Netflix is constantly updating their movie list, so we’ve picked the best family movies available on Netflix for Jan/Feb 2015. If you don't have a Netflix account check out these titles with your own movie provider. Or tell us your favourites in the comment sections.

The Hobbit part 1 and 2 (PG, 12A) released 2012, 2013

The fantasy novel The Hobbit, published in 1937 and written by the legendary J.R.R Tolkien is only about 300 pages long, however director Peter Jackson believed there was more to the story than simple account of Bilbo Baggins and his quest to battle a dragon for treasure. Jackson turned Tolkien’s tale into an epic three part saga (over 8 hours) starring Martin Freeman and Ian Mckellen.

Both part 1 and 2 are available on Netflix and are great for a (long) rainy afternoon spent indoors. This is a visually magnificent film, but disappointedly, no Lord of the Rings. Still, older kids, teens and parents will enjoy this epic journey through Middle Earth.

Pirates of the Caribbean - At World’s End (PG, 12A) released 2007

This is the third installment of the pirate fantasy film starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, with Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom as WIll and Elizabeth. This 2007 film is a conclusive final to the first and second movies (Curse of the Black Pearl, The Dead Man’s Chest), and the last time we see the trio together.

Besides the complex plot that attempts to reconcile many of the subplots of the first two films (rather confusingly) this is still a funny, rollercoaster ride full swashbuckling adventure with stunning CGI action. The story sees Jack caught in the land of dead, who must be rescued by his friends in order to defeat his enemy, Lord Beckett; leading to a fantastic and visually mindbending final stand. Watch the first three together if you can.

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire - Released 2013 (PG, 12A)

Seems like every big budget fantasy movie has to have at least 3 parts, but The Hunger Games goes further with four complete movies for you to watch, with the last installment coming out later this year. In the second installment, Catching Fire, we find our hero, Katniss Everdeen, going on a victory tour with her partner Peta, after they both survived and won ‘the games’ in part one.

Katniss controversial win is seen as an uprising and soon she and Peta find themselves back in the ring to fight off another round of players. Although not as engaging as the first film and slow to start, this is still an enjoyable movie filled with the right amount of action and drama for both parents and kids. Probably suited to teens rather than young kiddies, as some of the death scenes are violent and pushing the limits of the PG rating.

Brave (PG) Released 2012

Away from the franchise now, but still with the bow and arrow theme, we have the lovable Pixar who created this hit movie about a young and determined Scottish Princess called Merida. Actress Kelly MacDonald and her beautiful scottish brogue narrates us through the the princess’s journey who is fighting to choose her own path in life that is defying the customs of her parents. When a reckless choice by Merida casts a curse on her family, she must use her skills as a brave archer to put things right before their lives are changed forever. A feel good movie with great comedy and an all star cast.

Pocahontas (U) Released 1995

Another female lead, but without CGI is the a traditional Disney cartoon, Pocahontas. Hard to believe it is now 20 years old, this ‘historic’ drama stars Mel Gibson, with Christian Bale having a voice over role. Pocahontas is based on the American fable where a young Virginian Native American girl saves the life of a captured Englishman. Though this story is based on no known fact, the film version is full of Disney splendor with talking animals, song and drama that will bring a tear to any parent’s eye. Great for young and old, this film has become a classic Disney love story that will fill you with an inner warmth; far removed from the icy february winds outside.
