Minister Hanafin said "many of these projects were addressing the education infrastructure needs of rapidly developing areas. Where ever possible the Department will use standard designs and design and build contracts to ensure that accommodation is provided within the earliest possible timeframe."

Outlining the continuing progress and momentum in the schools building and modernisation programme, Minister Hanafin said "we are striving to ensure that children and teaching staff in our schools have facilities which are suitable to their growing needs.  By maintaining a steady flow of projects through the schools building and modernisation programme, in a planned way we can make constant progress and provide new and upgraded facilities for the benefit of the whole school community."

Minister Hanafin said that the Government investment in school buildings this year, which amounts to over €540million, will facilitate construction work on over 150 other large-scale projects which will deliver over 15,000 permanent places in new schools and the extension and modernisation of facilities in existing schools for over 45,000 pupils.

In total, over 1,500 building and modernisation projects are expected to be delivered this year in schools throughout the country.
