4 Nightmarish Playground Surfaces from your Childhood

The school playground is a giddy place full of energy and liveliness but, sometimes, kids can play a little too much and end up hurting themselves if they fall. We all have scars on our knees from our time in the playground, skidding on tarmac and getting a scolding from our mothers due the fact that our newly washed uniforms are now covered in mud and grass-stains. Here's our 4 worst playground surfaces to fall on, try not to grimace too much!

Tarmac

Tarmac was great for basketball and chalk masterpieces but we all ran a little slower on tarmac as children. The threat of skinned knees and road rash was just too frightening!

Gravel

Gravel is the evil cousin of Tarmac. If you ever had a bad fall on gravel then you know the torture of having the cut cleaned and the endless hours of trying to get all the little stones out.

Woodchip

Woodchip was nice and soft to fall on but the hours it took to pick those tiny shards out of your jumper just wasn't worth it! Not to mention getting the odd splinter here and there!

Grass

Grass was great but if it rained (and it rains pretty much all the time in Ireland) then you had to choose between going out to kick a ball around in the mud or not being killed by your mother when you got home.

Sanctuary Synthetics

Now if only we had THIS type of playground when we were younger, we'd all have a few less scars on our knees!
